Karl grew up in Alton, Illinois and has lived in Madison County most of his life. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton School of Business) in 1955 and from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1958. While in law school, he was Editor of the College of Law Law Review (1958) and in the Order of the Coif, in addition to being in Phi Delta Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma. Subsequent to his graduation from law school, he served in the Judge's Advocate General Corps with the U.S. Air Force and in 1960 returned to Alton and began as an original partner in the firm (then known as Hoagland, Maucker, Bernard & Almeter). Beginning in 1962, he served as Vice-President and General Counsel for Jefferson Smurfit Corporation and its corporate predecessor, Alton Box Board Company, and in 1986, he became Vice-President and General Counsel for Container Corporation of America. At that point, he left the firm and worked "in-house" at the Smurfit entities until his retirement in 1992. He has remained "of counsel" for the firm up to the present time.
